The CRTC regulates the use of automatic dialing-announcing devices (ADAD) throughout Canada. Regulation applies to all wireline, wireless and resale providers of telecom services and their customers.
Calls using ADADs are permitted where there is no attempt to solicit i.e.:
- Public service reasons
- Emergency purposes
- Collection of overdue accounts
- Market survey or research
- Schedule appointments
Permitted calls:
- Are restricted to weekdays from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sundays from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. These restrictions do not apply to calls placed for public service reasons.
- Restricted times do not apply to calls made to business
- Must not be placed to emergency lines or healthcare facilities.
- Are to display the originating calling number or an alternate number where the caller can be reached (except where number display is unavailable for technical reasons).
- Cannot utilize sequential dialing.
- Should disconnect within 10 seconds of the called party hanging up.
CRTC regulations prohibit the use of ADADs to make unsolicited
calls for the purpose of solicitation. These include calls on
behalf of a charity, radio station promotions or calls referring
the called party to a 900 or 976 number.
